What's the story?
PLANES, like Cars, takes place in a world in which all the inhabitants are vehicles. Ambitious young Nebraskan crop duster Dusty Crophopper (voiced by Dane Cook) dreams of flying in an annual international air race called Wings Around the World. To hone his skills, he asks legendary (and reclusive) former WWII fighter plane Skipper (Stacy Keach) to train him for the race and mechanic pal Dottie (Teri Hatcher) to get him ready for maximum speed. But former three-time racing champion Ripslinger (Roger Craig Smith) has no intention of letting some "farm boy" underdog beat him, so he enlists other planes in the competition to sabotage Dusty's chances. Meanwhile, Dusty befriends a Mexican plane called El Chupacabra (Carlos Alazraqui), who looks out for him during the race.

Planes, the new 3D cartoon from Disney, is set in the “World of Cars”, or so an on-screen caption tells us in the opening shot. Unfortunately, it stands in the same relation to Pixar’s rosy elegy for Route 66 as last year’s dreadful Tinker Bell and the Secret of the Wings did to the collected works of J.M. Barrie.

We are invited to cheer for an underdog called Dusty Crophopper, who is voiced by the American comedian Dane Cook. Dusty’s rivals are thin racial stereotypes, two of whom are engaged in a deeply weird plane-on-plane romance. DisneyToon Studios have borrowed so much from Pixar here, and yet they seem to have learned almost nothing.

Disney's Planes is an adventure that, like Cars, takes place in a world populated by vehicles. A few scenes of peril that place the main character in danger (a terrible storm, a squadron of fighter planes crashing, etc.) may upset younger/more sensitive kids. Because the story is about a crop duster who dares to compete against racing planes, many insults are hurled his way -- like "farm boy," "loser," and "bum," as well as "idiot" and "moron." There's an overt romantic subplot between two secondary characters, including a moonlight serenade and the appearance of lots of kiss marks on the male plane's body. Parents are likely to notice a quick derogatory reference to male planes as "ladies" and a lot of cultural stereotypes in the movie (which warrant a post-viewing check-in with kids). But ultimately the message encourages kids to overcome their limitations.

L'histoire ?!
Réalisé par Klay Hall (La Fée Clochette et la Pierre de Lune), Planes est le premier film d'une toute nouvelle franchise des DisneyToon Studios. Dusty Crophopper est un jeune avion épandeur rêvant de devenir un avion de course. Il se met ainsi dans l'idée de participer au Grand Rally du Tour du Ciel, la course la plus prestigieuse au monde. Avec l’aide de ses amis et d’un vétéran de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale qui a de la sagesse à revendre, il va décoller pour l’aventure de sa vie, se mesurant aux plus grands, dépassant ses limites et volant à des altitudes qu’il n’aurait jamais cru atteindre…

Parlons de ce film !
Avec un budget de 50 millions de dollars, il est difficile de comparer Planes avec les autres films d'animation maison dont les budgets sont en moyenne trois fois plus importants. Il faut donc prendre le film tels qu'il est : une production à budget réduit sans grande prétention. Une fois cela à l'esprit, on prend un réel plaisir à découvrir les aventures de Dusty et ses amis. Certes on pourrait reprocher à Planes son scénario sans surprise et très inspiré par Cars - Quatre Roues ou bien encore son manque d'ambition artistique, mais l'intérêt du film n'est pas là. Contrairement à Cars 2 qui avait été une grosse déception pour beaucoup de monde, Planes a le mérite de remplir son contrat en nous offrant un divertissement honnête, de qualité et maîtrisé de bout en bout. Les personnages, bien que très classiques, sont attachants et ont l'avantage de ne pas nous taper sur les nerfs comme un certain Martin dans Cars 2.

           ' "Planes", c'est drôle, divertissant et agréable. C'est un bon film familial à voir '
